Budget, poverty and porn

Canberra news held the spotlight this week, but there were other issues for Christians to follow.

Here's the top five.

Budget reaction - Whatever else the budget did, it was the foreign aid and welfare measures which caused Christian groups most alarm. Anglicare spoke out on sydneyanglicans and the ABC and Anglican Aid was likewise upset.

Poverty report - Anglicare also launched its State of Sydney survey.

Porn - After the news that children are accessing porn at younger ages (from 11 upwards), Insight on SBS ran a discussion forum that included Sydney Anglican rector Dominic Steele. Watch it here and you may be surprised what an extensive knowledge most teenagers have of 'porn culture'.

Same-sex marriage - For his own reasons, Barack Obama came out in support of same-sex marriage. Julia Gillard didn't and groups like the Australian Christian Lobby deserve support as they continue to speak out.

In Anglican Communion news, this week, addresses by Peter Jensen's speech (audio) and Michael Nazir-Ali (text) were posted after the recent FCA leaders conference. The Church of Ireland was also involved in general synod debate on homosexuality.

Persecution - some distressing reports from Burma, Indonesia and Iran.
