Unreal, banana peel! Johnny Burns

David McKay

Johnny Burns' latest CD is filled with catchy, simple songs that teach kids the truths of the gospel. The CD opens with an arresting didgeridoo and a song with an Aussie flavour, reminding us that Jesus is The Boomerang King " he's coming back again.

The songs are sung enthusiastically by Johnny and The On-Fire Kids Choir, and use a variety of instrumental backings,  including electric piano, guitars, trumpet and electronic organ, and incorporate a range of styles including twelve bar blues, reggae and call and response.

Whatever reminds us to do everything for God's glory when things are going well and when they're not, and is based on Paul's words at the end of 1 Corinthians 10.

In the reggae-inspired song Most Of All the children sing:

I love my teddy bear
I love my monster truck
I love my pussy cat
And I love my rubber duck
But most of all I love Jesus
Because he first loved me

Most of the song lyrics on the colourful fold-out CD booklet give a Bible reference which the song is based on. For example, the title track refers the listener to Matthew 28:1-10, Matthew's account of Jesus' resurrection.

I think children, parents and Sunday School teachers looking for material that presents the message of God's love for us and our need to respond to this love will find this collection of songs quite appealing - whoops!
