South Sydney Anglican Church has a fruitful evangelical ministry to those living in government housing in Redfern-Waterloo.
We are currently seeking to employ a part-time chaplain who ministers to people with mental health, addiction and crime-related issues. The role requires evangelism, pastoral care and practical social-work type care of individuals.
The church vision is to be “a Community overflowing with faith, hope and love in Jesus.” We have a great breadth of people from different ages and different socio-economic backgrounds, both rich and poor who support the chaplain. We endeavour to be liberal with God’s grace and yet theologically conservative in our reading of Scripture.
The current chaplain oversees a midweek BBQ, runs a Bible Study Group, leads Christianity Explored Courses, runs Overcomers Outreach for people with addiction and supervises about 20 church volunteers who help distribute OzHarvest food on Fridays. The chaplain also does pastoral care and practical support of the people in his sphere of ministry. The fulfilment of this role will require 3 days a week, plus Sunday church attendance.
Experience leading Bible study groups, doing evangelism, basic business administration and pastoral care/counselling are necessary. The right candidate will need to be a mature Christian, with considerable life experience and a willingness to learn. We are open to both clergy and lay applications.
