Church Hill Anglican (made up of St Philip’s Church, Sydney and the Garrison Church, Miller’s Point) is seeking an Assistant Minister (Gatherings) to lead and develop the worship, music, and gathered life of the parish.
This role brings together responsibility for building on the already strong music culture of Church Hill Anglican while helping lift the tempo, clarity, and evangelistic warmth of our gatherings. The successful applicant will report to the Executive Minister, and work closely with as the Rector, congregation ministers, staff team, and wardens to serve the spiritual life, pastoral care, and mission of the church.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Assistant Minister (Gatherings) exists to magnify Christ among us by shaping worship that is biblically rich, theologically clear, musically excellent, pastorally attentive, welcoming, and missionally inviting.
This role oversees worship and music and serving across all congregations, while also contributing more broadly to the life of our gatherings through training, leadership development, welcoming, prayer, and evangelistic pathways.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Leadership of Music, Worship & Gatherings
- Provide overall leadership of worship and music ministry across the parish
- Review and develop the culture of music and gathered worship with fresh theological and creative insight
- Plan and shape weekly corporate gatherings in partnership with the Rector and congregation ministers
- Introduce and curate new music in a way that is biblically faithful, musically excellent, and contextually appropriate
- Ensure services are clear, engaging, well-paced, and accessible to newcomers as well as long-standing members
2. Oversight of Weekly Gatherings
The Assistant Minister (Gatherings) will have oversight of worship, music, liturgy and rostering at 10.30am, 4pm, and 6pm services (with awareness of the 8.30am service at St Philip’s).
Responsibilities include:
- Song selection aligned with teaching series and service aims
- Planning services in liaison with congregation ministers
- Rostering musicians, vocalists, sound and tech teams through Elvanto (or another agreed platform)
- Overseeing sound and production quality across services
- Regular leading across gatherings (except 8.30am St Philip’s)
- Meeting with the teaching ministers to plan teaching series in advance
- Overseeing creative and visual elements for services and teaching series (including promotional visuals)
3. Pastoring, Training & Discipling Leaders
- Recruit, train, supervise, and pastor musicians, vocalists, and team leaders
- Identify, encourage, onboard, and equip new musicians from both within the church and the wider Christian community
- Run rehearsals, workshops, and training focused on ensemble playing, and service leadership
- Develop musicians not only in skill, but in spiritual maturity and ministry mindset
- Oversee sound (and possibly tech) teams according to gifting, including training and pastoral care
- Improve consistency and quality of sound operation and production across the parish
4. Broader Magnification & Ministry Leadership
In addition to music and worship, this role contributes to the magnified life of the church more broadly:
- Run training in leading services, leading prayer, and public participation in gatherings
- Be involved in welcoming and hospitality culture across the parish
- Coordinate and lead quarterly Prayer and Praise Nights in collaboration with the staff team
- Contribute to evangelism courses, pathways, and training where appropriate
- Be highly connected relationally across the church through rosters, teams, and leadership development
5. Administration & Stewardship
- Manage music, sound, service rosters and AV rosters through Elvanto
- Maintain up-to-date inventories of music and AV equipment
- Oversee maintenance, repair, storage, and purchasing of equipment
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting to CCLI
- Maintain current awareness of Christian music and worship resources
THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT IS LIKELY TO HAVE
- A heart for pastoral ministry and the growth of the local church
- A robust evangelical theology, confidently applied to corporate worship
- The capacity to articulate an evangelical theology of singing, worship, and gathered life
- At least 12 months’ experience in a similar ministry role
- Strong musical ability and leadership presence
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- The ability to work under the Rector and collaboratively within a creative staff team
- The maturity and initiative required for a full-time Assistant Minister, very possibility with theological education
