The crucifixion of Jesus is one of the most heart-wrenching elements of the Christian faith – knowing that our Saviour willingly put himself in our place, enduring so much for our sake. Season 6 of The Chosen focuses on this last day of Jesus’ life, and while it won’t appear on our TV screens until November, the makers of the series are offering churches the chance to see Episode 1 up to two months before it premieres on Prime Video.
“We believe this season will prompt some of the biggest questions about Jesus that the series has explored so far,” says Kylie Biddle, the church relationships manager for The Legacy Group & Faith Media, which is distributing The Chosen in Australia, NZ and the Pacific Islands. “Giving churches early access means they can experience this powerful next chapter together, while creating a place for conversation and answering those questions... We’re incredibly excited.”
Churches can watch the episode from as early as September 15 but need to sign up for access to a streaming link. They will then receive a pack that includes a host guide, discussion guide and prayer suggestions.
While it might seem lengthy to explore the events of Good Friday over six episodes, the gospels make it clear how much occurs over this 24-hour period. Episode 1 focuses on the tumultuous first hours after Jesus’ arrest: the fear and confusion of the disciples and their distress at Judas’ betrayal; Jesus’ first interrogation by Annas; and, we’re told, Nicodemus standing up for Jesus against the High Priest.
It sounds as though the followers of Jesus might be a little braver in the series than they were in real life at this point, but the main thing is getting right the message of the gospel – Jesus’ innocence and sacrifice on our behalf.
From the little available to view beforehand, the series is going to be harrowing and challenging viewing. Christians need to be prepared to give answers for the hope they have, and their thankfulness in their salvation, to people who want to talk and ask questions.
“The response from those who’ve already seen Episode 1 has been incredible,” Biddle says. “People are captivated by the story, opening their bibles to explore moments and ideas they’ve never noticed before – and as soon as it finishes, they’re ready to watch it all over again.
“Every scene, every conversation and every setting holds layers of meaning.”
Episodes 1-3 of The Chosen, Season 6, will be available on Prime Video from November 15. The following three episodes will release in subsequent weeks.
