Archbishop Peter Jensen responds to perceived Anglicare crisis

Archbishop Peter Jensen, Chairman of Anglicare Sydney, spoke recently to Anglican Media about the role of Anglicare Sydney in the ministry and outreach of the Diocese.

He also commented on the present review of the policies, strategies and structure of Anglicare, as well as emphasizing the importance of actions of compassion, care and social justice in Christian witness.

"There are some people who have assumed that our commitment to the Diocesan Mission means that we give no priority to acts of compassion and mercy in our witness and discipleship, both for individuals and for our corporate entity," the Archbishop said. "Nothing could be further from the truth. Biblical teaching will not allow us to hold such a superficial view of Christian witness.

"The Bible teaches us that we are to live for the gospel, in service to God and his Son Jesus Christ and as a consequence to all people. As we engage in our gospel mission we will see lives transformed, and as we ourselves grow further in Christian maturity and knowledge of God's Word, then we will continue to be fashioned by God's Spirit into the likeness of Jesus Christ. Those who are his disciples must be like him, servants of others. We are driven to love, compassion and care for all people, including those in crisis and in desperate need, and those who live on the margins of society," Archbishop Jensen said.

"Anglicare has a proud history of assistance and service to the parishes as they witness and serve in Christ's name. I am committed to ensuring that this is maintained and strengthened in the life of this Diocese.

"I welcome the review of the strategy, structure and programs of Anglicare. It is correct that Anglicare has a serious financial problem at this time, but it is certainly quite incorrect to assume that it faces bankruptcy. The present careful management of our resources is going to result in a correction of the financial problems. Added to this, the review of structure and programs, and any consequential changes that will result are designed to strengthen Anglicare so that it is an even more effective service provider for the parishes and those in need and in crisis."
