The Archbishop of Sydney’s Anglican Aid has opened a flood appeal as the death toll rises and the floodwaters widen in Southern Queensland.

Anglican Aid has a range of international and domestic assistance programmes, as well as special emergency appeals as the need arises.

“Our hearts go out to those bereaved families and those still waiting for news of loved ones. Others have seen the floods sweep away their homes and livelihoods” said Archbishop Peter Jensen.

“Anglican Aid provides an avenue for us to render assistance in a distinctly Christian way.”

Thousands of people have been displaced in the Darling Downs and further west and the flooding focus has now shifted to homes in Brisbane as the Brisbane River system copes with weeks of heavy rain.

The Director of Anglican Aid, David Mansfield says staff are fielding calls from people who want to donate to help alleviate hardship and help in rebuilding.

“It is fast approaching, if not already, the most destructive natural disaster we have seen in this country in terms of its impact on homes, livelihoods, infrastructure and long term economic, physical and emotional wellbeing.” said Mr Mansfield.

“Anglican Aid, through this Flood Appeal, will be able to help Christian partners on the ground to bring compassionate relief to many people worst affected by these floods.” he said.

Donations can be made by calling 1800 653 903 or through the quick donation page on anglicanaid.org.au (select ‘Flood Appeal’).
