The Rector of Engadine, Rev Rick Lewers, is to be the next Bishop of Armidale.

A special election Synod convened in Moree at the weekend to decide on a successor to Bishop Peter Brain who has led the Northern New South Wales diocese for the past 11 years. In accordance with the retirement age ordinance, Bishop Brain is due to step down in April next year.

The Dean of Armidale, Stephen Williams, presided over the special Synod of around 120 members.

It's understood they considered three names and finally voted to call Mr Lewers.

After a curacy in Liverpool in the late 80's, Mr Lewers began a ministry in Canberra for more than a decade.

During that time he was rector of St Matthew's, Wanniassa.

He returned to Sydney to work for the Department of Evangelism and then as Rector of Engadine from 2005.

Mr Lewers is 53. He could take up his post as early as mid-2012.

Mr Lewers told sydneyanglicans.net that he is humbled to have been chosen.

"It's all the more humbling when you consider the quality of the other two men whose names went forward. I'm also apprehensive because I know the importance of the position and the significant responsibility I will undertake."

At its meeting on Monday 14th November, Sydney Diocese Standing Committee unanimously agreed to send its congratulations to Mr Lewers and assure him and his wife Janene of their prayers and good wishes for his new role.

Bishop Brain told the Armidale newspaper he has enjoyed his 11 years in the diocese and was grateful for the support from his clergy and a large number of dedicated and courageous Christians in the parishes. He said he intends to continue to be involved in ministry beyond his retirement.
