After 14 years of dedicated service to the women of the Sydney Diocese, Archdeacon Kara Hartley has announced she will step down at the conclusion of 2026.
While Archdeacon Hartley originally envisioned a seven-year commitment as Archdeacon for Women’s Ministry, her tenure spanned double that time.
Having expanded the women’s ministry team, she believes now is a fitting time to hand over to new leadership to bring fresh vision and shape to the ministry.
"I have valued the opportunity to serve in this role and will especially miss the opportunity to meet individually with women and hear the amazing stories of how God is using women in this diocese for his glory," the Archdeacon said in a letter to ministry workers. "I am so thankful for the support I've received over the years. We have a precious fellowship and partnership in the gospel, for which I am deeply thankful."

As well as her primary role as Archdeacon for women, Archdeacon Hartley has served diocesan and national committees at a high-level.
These include co-chairing the Domestic Abuse Monitoring Committee, established after the Synod approved the Diocese Domestic Abuse Policy in 2018, serving as a Governing Board member of Moore College and an Ordination Chaplain as well as membership of the Doctrine Commission, Standing Committee and General Synod.
"I am not sure what's next but trust the Lord to guide me into new opportunities," Archdeacon Hartley said.
Archbishop Kanishka Raffel described her as "a tireless, gracious and energetic advocate of the ministry of women 'contending side by side' in the cause of the gospel across our diocese."
"I am immensely grateful to God for her love for God's Word, zeal for the honour of the Lord Jesus and her prayerful encouragement and mentoring of the Lord's servants."
"Personally, I have treasured her wise counsel, godly example and servant leadership," the Archbishop said. "She has been to so many, including me, a faithful friend and fellow worker. I eagerly look forward to Kara's continued contribution to the ministry of the gospel in our diocese. "
An announcement about the next Archdeacon for Women's Ministry is expected by the end of the year.
