The founders of two overseas aid organisations are among several Anglicans awarded Australia Day honours this year.

Malcolm and Sally Begbie, from Sydney, have been made Officers of the Order of Australia (AO) for their work.

The couple established the Hong Kong based international aid organisation, Crossroads Foundation in 1995 and it now employs 70 full time staff and 300 volunteers.

 

 

 

 

 

Branches have been established in the United Kingdom and Kazakhstan.

The official citation for the Begbies reads "For distinguished service to the international community in the provision of humanitarian relief, particularly through the Crossroads Foundation, and as a significant contributor to United Nations efforts to connect business organisations with those in need."

Associate Professor Alan Watson, the founder of the Katoke Trust for Overseas Aid, which has a significant work in education in Tanzania, has been made a Member of the Order of Australia, (AM).

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr Watson, of Gymea, is a Senior Visiting Fellow and Associate Professor of the University of NSW School of Education and was instrumental in the formation of a link between the School and the Katoke Teachers College.

OAM awards

Several other Anglicans have been given the Medal of the order of Australia (OAM), including Professor Brian Fletcher, of Eastwood, for service to education as an academic, researcher and author in the discipline of Australian history. Professor Fletcher has been the Chair of the Board of Australian Anglican Studies, since 1997.

Alice (Pix) Halloran, of Galston, Director of Nursing at Anglican Retirement Villages from 1993-1997 has been given an OAM for service to aged welfare in New South Wales.

Dorothy Phipps of Richmond was commended for service to the community of the Hawkesbury region, and to theatre through the Richmond Players. Miss Phipps is a former Treasurer and Warden of St Peter’s Anglican Church and a lifetime parishioner.

Among awards in provincial New South Wales, the former President of the Mother's Union in the Armidale Diocese, Mrs Joan Hausfeld of South Tamworth was awarded an OAM. Mrs Hausfeld has been deeply involved with St Peter's Anglican Church, South Tamworth, including Coordinating its Senior Citizens program since 1987. The OAM citation was "For service to the community of Tamworth through a range of voluntary roles."
