Mrs Pam Goodhew, the wife of former Archbishop Harry Goodhew, has died of cancer.

Mrs Goodhew, who was 90, passed away on Friday, November 15, while in palliative care at Piper House in Dapto.

Born Pamela Coughlan on March 7, 1935, she married Harry Goodhew in 1958, one day before his ordination. She and Bishop Goodhew served in various positions including at the Bush Church Aid mission at Ceduna and in parish ministry at Carlingford and Coorparoo in Brisbane.

Harry Goodhew served as Archbishop of Sydney from 1993 to 2000.

During that time, Mrs Goodhew ran scores of retreats, interviews and civic dinners at the Archbishop’s residence, as well as overseeing the heritage refurbishment of Bishopscourt.

“Pam Goodhew was a devoted and godly mother, grandmother and great-grandmother,” Archbishop Kanishka Raffel said in his tribute. “For 67 years she served her Lord and his church alongside her husband Harry, and shared his ministry in parishes, as bishop and Archbishop, modelling hospitality, organisation and service of the saints.

“She had a great love for the wives of clergy and 'rectory families' and provided counsel, encouragement and support in countless, thoughtful ways. In everything she sought to promote faith in Christ and service of his people. She rejoiced in the Saviour who loved her and gave himself for her.

“We give heartfelt thanks for the life of a faithful disciple of Jesus whose ministry, encouragement and example will be long treasured by all who knew her.”

The funeral will be held on Tuesday 25th November, at 11 am at Figtree Anglican Church, 4-10 Gibsons Rd, Figtree.

The service will be livestreamed here.

A more detailed tribute to Mrs Goodhew will be published in the December-January edition of the diocesan magazine, Southern Cross.
