The middle-of-the-night kick-offs in Australia for Germany 2006 means most churches are not able to hold evangelistic activities around matches like the previous World Cup and other recent big sporting events.

Most churches have opted for low-key, in-house events, such as one southern Sydney Anglican church which screened the Japan versus Australia game on the church's large-screen projector for 8 over-joyed church members and one friend.

However, for inner-city All Soul's, Leichhardt, the ministry context could not be more different than the sleepy suburbs.

Sydney's "little Italy' that has become soccer-central as fans from around Sydney watch games all night on the Norton Street big screen.

Fans partied all through Monday night to Tuesday breakfast after victories by Australia and then Italy.

With the local Anglican church located on the busy Norton Street cafe strip, Tim Foster, minister of All Souls' is seeking to keep God on the agenda for the fans that pass by.

"I am trying to put up a sign after each Australia game," he says.

The current sign reads "Jesus rose after 3 days" the Socceroos scored 3 goals. Coincidence?"

Perhaps somewhat pessimistically, Mr Foster already has the wording of the sign for the Brazil game worked out: "Jesus saves better than Schwarzer".

"That gives me some time to come up with something for after the Croatia game," he says.

"For the Croatia sign I want something that is a slight twist on a saying of Jesus " a bit like the "Come to me all you who are Labor and I will give you rest' after the Federal election."

Mr Foster has been coming up with a quirky sign every week for nearly 5 years. The signs have gained a lot of local fans, as well as media interest.

"Whenever I meet anyone form the community and say I am the minister here the first things they say is that they love our signs and every day they look out for the next one," he says.

"They have raised our profile in the community and become an important point of connection as well as promotion of events."
