Is Mark Goode going to miss his family this weekend? The answer is a short, emphatic "No!' His wife and kids are happy to step aside so he can head for the hills with 4,500 other men.
This year's Men's Katoomba Convention (MKC) begins tonight, the first of three weekends of teaching for husbands, brothers, fathers and grandfathers gathered from as far afield as Broken Hill and Mangrove Mountain.
"It's great fellowship with other blokes," says Mr Goode.
"I really enjoy the chance to share the burdens and struggles of life."
Mr Goode will be heading to Katoomba with five other men from St Paul's Anglican Church, Cambridge Park.
Even the prospect of grown men living cheek-to-jowl in a tiny caravan for two days hasn't turned him off attending.
His job as a policeman has taken him all over the state, but MKC has remained a regular fixture on Mr Goode's calendar from 2001.
"I really enjoy getting together with thousands of men and singing and listening to God's word taught faithfully," he says.
This year David Cook, principal of Sydney Missionary Bible College, and Mike Raiter the principal of the Bible College of Victoria will tackle Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, under the title of "Telling it like it really is!'
Newly appointed Katoomba Christian Convention chairman the Rev Alan Stewart says the series will cut through the "mumbo jumbo' and get to the point on key issues like life, love, possessions, values and priorities.
"Although men appreciate straight talking " they're also prone to kidding themselves and this is a chance for a reality check," he says.
"We're trying some new initiatives this year including a "hypothetical' session about putting the Sermon on the Mount into practice in men's lives."
"As well, we'll be having more time for prayer and reflection on the talks and a mini-seminar on men's leadership in the family" .it's well worth setting aside the time to be there!"
The MKC 2006 program begins this Friday as is repeated on the 25th and 26th of February, and the 3rd and 4th of March.
