In their 1973 song “Time”, Pink Floyd sang -

Every year is getting shorter,
never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught
or half a page of scribbled lines

That’s true for me, I’m sure it’s true for you. There is never enough time, we are all “time poor”. So why on earth would I agree to write a weekly column for this website? After all, writing is so, so time-consuming. And difficult. And writing to a deadline - agony.

But I like writing, and I feel I have something to say. Maybe more than one thing. And all writers want to be read, regardless of what they say. They will take any chance to expand their audience. I didn’t even consider saying no when I was asked to do this column. The editor began trying to persuade me, but I told him to stop. “You had me at ‘Hello’,” I said.

So who am I, and what is this column about? Well, I earn my daily bread working in software development for a large multi-national. I live in the inner west with my eldest son, and I have two other sons who live on the rural fringe of the city with their mum. I attend an edgy little church in Annandale, and together we are all hoping to become more edgy and less little as the years slide by. As far as interests go, I am really switched on by music, reading, combat sports and theology. Oh, and the past few years I’ve been writing a little blog that’s probably gotten more attention than it deserves…

That’s the bio, what about the column? The editors have given me a pretty flexible brief. They want me to interact with popular culture, especially music. They also want me to write about everyday Christian living from the perspective of a layman, to give my thoughts on church, mission and the theological currents that occasionally sweep through the net. Actually, I suspect they’ll publish anything I write that’s interesting and at least tangentially Christian.

So there’s my first column, signed and sealed. The subject matter (myself) is the least interesting thing I’ll be tackling this year, so please stay tuned. Next week I’m going to write about the most popular Australian band of all time, AC/DC. And I’ll answer that pressing question - are fans (like myself) on a Highway to Hell?
