What do the Terminator, Shrek, the Lord of the Rings and Cinderella have in common? According to one of Sydney's leading women's ministers, they are all part of the "human fiction' that ignores the need for Christ to return.
""I'll Be Back!' These words said by Arnie Schwarzenegger in Terminator perfectly reflect the hope of all, that a super man of some sorts will bring an end to evil and great suffering," says Archdeacon Narelle Jarrett, Principal of Mary Andrews College.
"This is the myth of movie world " the hero winning through against all odds, that evil will be destroyed and hope fulfilled."
"But Arnie's return and rescue is nothing. It's the human fiction that we can fix things up here."
To provide women with a biblical grounding to think through these issues, the return of the true "super man' " Jesus " was the focus of this year's teaching at the Mary Andrews College Ministry conference.
Approximately 400 women from as far away as Melbourne heard the word of God for a day of encouragement and challenge at the MAC annual conference held on the weekend.
Usually a weekend residential conference, it was remodelled in 2006 into a day conference at the University of Western Sydney campus in Rydalmere, with the aim of being accessible for women from every part of Sydney Diocese.
Talks were given by Rhonda Barry, Jennie Baddeley, Jackie Stoneman and Narelle Jarrett.
They focused on an aspect of the promise of Christ "Indeed, I am coming soon!' in Revelation :22:12 and what 1 Thessalonians 5 teaches about the what and the when of that day.
It was a conference that also thought through the nature of the Antichrist " the one or ones against Christ, of the ultimate control of God over all, and of the armour of Christ that Christians are to wear " the armour of love, truth and compassion, says Archdeacon Jarrrett.
"We know life is unfair that really tragic unfair things happen," Archdeacon Jarrett says.
"We cry out to God day and night about injustice in the world, about poverty, about our marriages, or singleness, our painful lives, our divorces, our grief in the death of some one we love, a disaster that comes upon a child, the evil we see daily on TV."
"Endlessly down through all the ages every minute of every day the Lord hears us crying: "please stop this'. And he will."
"[The Bible teaches us] how we are to live in relation to the certainty that Jesus will keep his promise, as God from the beginning has shown himself faithful to all his promises."
Mary Andrews College is celebrating its largest ever intake of students this year.
