One of the very best ways to get people mobilised for mission is to give them an assignment and train them accordingly.

With a clear goal in view, almost anything (under God) is possible! That was certainly the experience of a small team of evangelists from St Paul’s Chatswood. 12 men and women (representing each of the English-speaking and Chinese congregations) flew into the diocese of Ballarat for 6 days intensive mission in October.

At the invitation of the rector of South Ballarat, the Rev Mark Schnerring and with the blessing of the Bishop, the Right Rev Michael Hough, the team partnered the parish in reaching out to their urban and semi-rural communities.

Prior to leaving, the team met in Sydney for 5 two hour training sessions. Team members received instruction in preparing and sharing their testimonies, the presentation of different gospel outlines, door knocking, leaflet distribution, leading people to Christ and praying for people in need.

These testimonies were systematically shared in Sunday services prior to leaving.

In addition, an orientation to the traditions (churchmanship) of the diocese of Ballarat was conducted.

One of the aims of the mission was to filter people into the Introducing God course. At all events, this programme was promoted and invitations were given out.

The team worked alongside the saints from Ballarat. Wherever possible, Sydney and Ballarat people were paired for door knocking and a range of hospitality events. The rector used the time of mission to launch a new young adults’ ministry, a men’s breakfast, and a ladies’ craft meeting.

The team(s) were also trained in situ. This was followed by extended times of prayer and debriefing.

On the final Sunday, two evangelistic services were conducted. A traditional ‘altar call’ was given and some 19 people ‘came forward’.

Back in Sydney, individuals and small groups prayed daily for the team and were keen to get the ‘e-updates’ throughout the week.

After a very moving farewell (replete with hugs and tears) the Sydney team were prayed for and departed.

Two days after the mission one team member led her sister-in-law in the UK to Christ - over the telephone! She then immediately scheduled and appointment with a friend to explain the gospel. Another team member met up with friends for a holiday. They asked her why she went to Ballarat and she was able to speak to them (for the very first time) of her relationship with Jesus.

Being part of the Ballarat team has equipped and enthused the Sydney contingent for mission in their local context too.

We’ve started planning for the October 2007 trip. I know of 12 starters already!
