The Rev Ian Cox was appointed as the new Archdeacon of Liverpool (the Georges River Region) at Standing Committee on Monday, August 25 by Archbishop Peter Jensen.
Mr Cox has been the rector of Brighton/Rockdale Anglican Church since 2003.
He is a graduate of Ridley College, who has served in Sydney Diocese since 1977.
Prior to that Mr Cox served at Holy Trinity Adelaide. He has served as rector in the parishes of Lalor Park, Lithgow and Wollongong.
Mr Cox is also Area Dean of St George Deanery, and a member of Standing Committee.
Archdeacon Geoff Huard will retire as Archdeacon of Liverpool at the end of November, having had his retirement date extended by Standing Committee earlier this year.
Mr Cox will succeed Archdeacon Huard from December 1, 2008.
The Archbishop requested that Standing Committee extend Mr Cox's retirement, which was passed unanimously.
The Standing Committee extended Mr Cox's date of retirement by a further three years to December 31, 2011, which according to Archbishop Jensen will allow "for a good transition for the region, considering that Bishop Tasker retires next year".
Mr Cox is also one of the ministry chaplains, and a member of the Diocesan Tribunal.
In announcing Mr Cox's appointment, Archbishop Jensen spoke of him as a man with "a wide knowledge and experience of the diocese".
"He is a man of godliness and gentleness, and a ready rapport with the clergy of his region. He is a key member of the Regional Council and of a small group working closely with Bishop Peter Tasker on multi-ethnic issues, particularly in relation to the emphasis on ministry from Marrickville to Bankstown," Archbishop Jensen said.
