The Archbishop of Sydney has launched an emergency appeal as authorities in the Philippines say they are overwhelmed by the aftermath of super-typhoon Haiyan.

The typhoon is described as one of the most powerful ever recorded on land. It struck on Friday 8th of November.

Millions have been affected in the central Philippines and the official death toll has already climbed well past 2,000.

Some isolated regions are only now being reached with food, water and medical help the immediate priority.

After extensive communications with Anglican Aid’s partner in Quezon City in the Philippines, Samaritana Transformation Ministries, and enquiries through the Episcopal Church of the Philippines, Anglican Aid CEO, David Mansfield was satisfied that aid could be disbursed directly to the most affected areas through trusted partners .

"The aid received by Anglican Aid will go to these partners who can target people in great need of water, food, clothing and shelter, and then the ongoing work of rehabilitation" Mr Mansfield said. “Anglican Aid doesn’t respond to every global emergency but where we can target aid right where it is needed most through local partners that we have already established relationships with, we are able to act immediately knowing our help will be speedily applied and gratefully received.”

Gifts are tax deductible.

Donations can be made via Anglican Aid’s Toll Free number on 1800 653 903,  www.anglicanaid.org.au or by cheque to “Anglican Aid - Philippines Typhoon Disaster Appeal”, PO Box Q 190 QVB NSW 1229
