As Sydney Anglican youth show an increasing interest in world mission, CMS is partnering Garage Hymnal for dynamic mission events throughout 2007.
According to Associate General Secretary of CMS Malcolm Reid, evangelical worship band Garage Hymnal have the perfect sound and background for reaching youth passionate about mission.
"What we are doing with Garage Hymnal is enlisting their support to grow interest in world mission in the hearts and minds of Sydney’s youth and to do it through their unique, contemporary music style," Mr Reid says.
"Two of the members of the band are missionary kids so they can relate stories of their childhood on the field from the stage and enthuse young people to ramp up their passion for mission."
Malcolm Reid says increasing numbers of young people are attending CMS Summer School.
"Obviously commitment to world mission for this age group is a growing reality. This is seen in websites like MySpace, where kids can become friends with people around the world and expand their worldview," he says.
Garage Hymnal was born out of the Sydney University Evangelical Union two years ago, and is currently working on a follow up to their debut album of congregational songs, Take My Life (Emu Music).
With a collaboration of over 50 songwriters and musicians, Garage Hymnal is driving for a unique sound " Bible-based teaching with a tight groove.
The debut performance of Garage Hymnal in their partnership with CMS will be at the CMS Summer School in Katoomba from 6-12 January.
Several members of the band have been youth leaders at CMS Summer School for a number of years.
“At least we can guarantee they will show up for the performances!” jokes Mr Reid.
"Garage Hymnal will take over the Mountain Camp venue of CMS Summer School for one or two of the youth evenings. We can’t wait to hear what they have to say and sing.”
CMS is closing pre-registrations before CMS Summer School for the first time to ensure the week of mission is organised to the highest standard, and every detail taken care of.
