It is fitting that the project to publish the Selected Works of Broughton Knox, begun in 1998, has been completed with the publication of this third and final volume of the series in the 150th anniversary year of Moore College and the 90th anniversary of Dr Knox's birth.
The Christian life is the general topic under which numerous theological papers, sermons, lecture notes and radio broadcast scripts are collected. Here we find the same perceptive insight of the application of the Bible's teaching that characterised so much of Broughton Knox's teaching ministry.
The volume begins with an excellent exploration of the gospel in the New Testament, emphasising the importance of understanding God's judgment before the benefits of God's salvation can be properly grasped.
The remainder of the book contains short and easily accessible articles on a wide variety of topics of general interest to the Christian reader. These latter articles provide an opportunity to see how Knox integrated the teaching of the Bible with his understanding of normal Christian living. On the topic of naked bathing beaches, for example, Knox argues that public nudity is not in line with God's law and that the resurrection of Jesus is a reminder of the coming judgment: "Christians should make the resurrection the foundation for their view of life and the world." (p. 200). A further piece directly addresses the Resurrection and Permissiveness (pp 172-73). Other gems address a critique of social justice, where Knox argues that compassion, not social justice, ought to be the motivation for Christian social action.
Knox was not afraid to address difficult social topics, in fact his understanding of the Christian faith compelled him to see how Christ's dominion over all things provides a critique of all human behaviour.
With characteristic aplomb, under girded with a rich biblical understanding of God's world, Knox addressed not only questions of prayer, joy and spiritual depression, but also civil disobedience, train strikes, abortion gambling and Sunday trading.
These nuggets of Christian wisdom are found in this fine concluding volume of Broughton Knox's Selected Works. We are indebted to Matthias Media for making the theology of Broughton Knox more accessible to the Christian public. Those who read his works will be richly rewarded.
