News of the recent peace agreement in the Sudan has been met with ambivalence by displaced Sudanese in Cairo, according to CMS NSW worker Mark Bennett.

The former Director of Refuge Egypt said the Darfur crisis reinforced their scepticism about the agreement.

"They have left behind relatives and colleagues and some feel guilt about this. Returning home without bettering themselves is a shameful thing."

Mr Bennett and his wife Annette visited Sudanese refugees in western Ethiopia recently, where many have been living in camps for 10 years.  "They are very excited about prospects for peace" their children do not know their home lands," he said. The former Sydney Anglicans visited Khartoum in August where 1.5 million people live in camps in the desert outside the city. He said those displaced are also hopeful they may be able to return home.
