Sydney is the only capital city in Australia that does not hold an annual, citywide, prayer breakfast, but that is set to change. Friday, June 4 will see the first annual, Sydney Prayer Breakfast which will give Sydney Christians an opportunity to come together to pray for their city.
Peter Kaldor from the City Bible Forum, one of the organisations supporting the prayer breakfast, believes that it will be helpful in many ways.
"There are few opportunities where people can gather en masse to pray for the city and the working population of the CBD," he said. "It is also a great opportunity to meet other Christians within business, encourage each other and make connections."
While Sydney has previously hosted various prayer breakfasts, there is currently nothing available for Christians looking to pray together. The Sydney Prayer Breakfast team is seeking to "create an annual event where Christians in the city gather together to be inspired and to pray for our city'.
According to Kaldor, the Sydney Prayer Breakfast will have a very broad focus, covering all aspects of Sydney life, rather than previous events, which were mainly focused on government and politics.
Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione, will speak about his life and the way that his faith has helped him conquer a variety of challenges both personally and within the workplace.
Silvie Paladino, best known for her "Carols by Candlelight' performances, will also speak the 350 people that Kaldor estimates will be in attendance.
While Kaldor admits that there is no way to ensure the longevity of the event, he says that the Sydney Prayer Breakfast committee is dedicated to ensuring that this event occurs annually, giving Sydney Christians an opportunity to continue to meet and pray together.
The event has received some coverage in the secular media, which Kaldor hopes will raise its profile.
"We really hope that the wider community realises that there are many Christians in Sydney who are praying for the city," he said.
For those who can't attend but would like to join in praying on Friday morning, some suggested topics of prayer are: business leaders, the legal and justice systems, the police force and our own behaviour and godliness at work as well as opportunities to share the gospel with our co-workers.
Sydney Prayer Breakfast will be held at the Shangri-La Hotel, 176 Cumberland St, Sydney, on Friday, June 4, from 6:50am-8:45am. Tickets cost $50.
