Last night, marketing experts met to develop the media strategy for a mission that will see at least 12 Sydney Anglican churches capitalise on the heightened spiritual attention created by next year’s World Roman Catholic Youth Day and Hillsong Conference.
The mission will involve Anglicans around the Diocese taking a week off work to participate in independent parish missions run under one slogan: "Starting the ultimate relationship'.
The Rev Dominic Steele from St Aidan’s, Annandale, says the idea behind the strategy is to have individual missions benefit from the impact of the same slogan and logo publicised across Sydney.
"The Hillsong Conference and the World Roman Catholic Youth Day will have increased the awareness of religious themes in Sydney in July," says Mr Steele.
Plans are to run the mission in the first week of August next year, in between World Roman Catholic Youth Day and the Beijing Olympics.
The mission idea officially kicked off with a brainstorming meeting of Sydney Anglican ministers in August, instigated by Mr Steele and Castle Hill’s rector, the Rev John Gray.
Parishes represented at the meeting included St Paul’s Carlingford, St Philip’s Caringbah, Christ Church St Ives, and younger churches such as Church by the Bridge.
Last night’s meeting focused on the development of a ‘local media pack’, including banners, flyers and teaching resources, with a look ‘hip’ enough for inner city parishes and ‘warm’ enough for the suburbs.
The mission theme has been chosen according to what is perceived to be the main need and interest in Sydney.
"We're not fighting the truth debate " we're talking about what it is to have a relationship with God," says Mr Steele.
One of the initial resources to accompany the developing mission idea will be a talk by Archbishop Peter Jensen on ‘Starting the Ultimate Relationship with God’, which will be filmed at St Aidan’s, Annandale on September 12.
Prayer will also be part of the common agenda, with churches set to pray for the mission as a whole at specific times before, during and after the mission.
