Judith Calf could have expected a longer rest at home after six years of service to her adopted Tanzania, but an opportunity to teach in the country’s north has her heading out again.
The CMS missionary, currently in Sydney on furlough, will move to the Diocese of Tanga on Tanzania's north coast.
There she will live in the township of Korogwe where she will join the staff of St Barnabas' Bible College, the Diocesan training facility.
Judith is the only non-Tanzanian member of staff at St Barnabas' Bible College as there are currently no other missionaries in Korogwe at present.
"[The move] has been in the pipeline for about a year. We just needed to sort through the issues of my relocating within Tanzania," Judith says.
Judith spent the last six years in the Diocese of Kagera located in the far north west of Tanzania.
She served at the Kagera Technical and Christian Training Centre (KTCTC) as both a teacher and principal working towards the day when the college could be led by Tanzanians.
The KTCTC was founded in 1995 to train lay leaders and evangelists in the Kagera Diocese.
CMS Australia has supported the college as mission partners since its opening.
In July 2005 Judith had the honour of handing over the leadership of KTCTC to new principal, the Rev Josias Msafiri.
Judith's relocation was officially approved by CMS Australia in November 2005.
"Having received an official invitation from Bishop Philip Baji that I come to the Diocese I set my departure date quickly!" Judith says.
Judith's appointment at St Barnabas' Bible College will start on February 27.
"I expect to be involved in teaching pastors and evangelists. We have left open my commitments until Bishop Philip and I can discuss the best way to use me," she says.
"There are enormous opportunities for teaching Bible knowledge and nurturing young Christians in the secondary schools."
Judith says Diocese of Tanga has a long history of Anglican involvement through the Universities Mission to Central Africa and the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel.
"[The diocese] has historically followed a high church style of liturgy and practice," she says.
"It is the first time a CMS Australia missionary is going to join them in gospel ministry."
Judith's CMS commissioning service will be held in Sydney at St John's Park, Edensor Rd, St John's Park on Saturday, February 25.
