Mr Roderick West and the Rev Canon Stanley Kurrle, two men with deep ties to education within the Sydney Anglican Diocese, have recently died.
Mr West, Head Master for 21 years at Trinity Grammar School, died on the morning of Monday, January 25th 2016. A teacher of both Latin and English, with a particular passion for Classics, he also served as an interim principal at Kambala Anglican Girls school before his retirement in 1996. He was also a Trustee of Thomas Moore’s estate, and served on the Moore Theological College board of governors.
According to current Head Master Mr Milton Cujes, a funeral service will be held for Mr West at the Trinity School Chapel on Friday February 5th, from 11am, with members of the Trinity and Anglican communities invited to attend. Clergy are requested to attend the service robed.
The Rev Canon Bruce Stanley Kurrle OBE, former Head of The King’s School, Parramatta, died on Wednesday January 20th 2016, age 93.
Canon Kurrle served two different Australian schools as Headmaster, working at Melbourne’s Caulfield Grammar School for nine years before arriving at King’s in Sydney in 1965. He remained there nearly twenty years until his retirement in 1983. He was Canon Emeritus of St Andrew’s Cathedral, and served on the New Universities Colleges Council, which founded UNSW’s New College and Robert Menzies College at Macquarie University.
“The King’s School will be eternally grateful for Canon Kurrle immense contribution,” said the King’s School in a written statement. “He was truly a wonderful gentle man, a gifted Christian educator and leader who possessed a warm and loving heart. He was greatly loved by his Old Boys.”
A memorial for Canon Kurrle will be held at The King's School, Parramatta, on Friday February 19th.
