New Anglican Dean of Sydney, Phillip Jensen, officially commences ministry to city

The new Anglican Dean of Sydney, well-known Bible teacher and evangelist Phillip Jensen, will be officially welcomed into his new ministry tonight in a special service in the heart of the city’s CBD.

While Dean Jensen took up his new position from February 22nd, his official welcome will be held tonight at the centre of his new ministry, St Andrew’s Cathedral, located near Town Hall Station on George Street.

The service, starting at 7.30pm, formally marks the commencement of Dean Jensen’s ministry at the Cathedral, as well as his position in the newly created role of Director of Ministry Training and Development for the Diocese of Sydney.

Known for his radical and passionate commitment to biblical preaching, Phillip Jensen is a sought-after speaker both throughout Australia and internationally. He has spoken at conferences in the UK, USA and South Africa in recent years.

Over the last 25 years Dean Jensen’s leadership and ministry style, while sometimes controversial, has had a major impact in seeing biblical Christianity revitalised throughout much of Sydney. He has served as chaplain to the University of NSW since 1975, and prior to his new appointment was rector of St Matthias’, Centennial Park from 1978. Under his leadership, hundreds of students have attended weekly Bible talks at UNSW. St Matthias’ has also seen significant growth during this time, and has planted around 15 new churches at various locations around Sydney Diocese, including ministries that have reached the Greek, Korean and Chinese communities.

He is also the author of several Christian books, and has been a key figure in the launch of the Ministry Training Strategy (MTS), a program which has seen hundreds of young men and women prepared for full-time Christian ministry throughout Sydney, Australia and the rest of the world.

In his first week in the new role, Dean Jensen has spoken at a series of one-day conferences at various locations throughout Sydney Diocese, on the topic of ‘growing local churches and planting new ones’.

Dean Jensen will deliver the sermon at tonight’s service, and expects to preach regularly on Sundays at the Cathedral. In addition to his new roles, he will retain oversight of the chaplaincy work at UNSW.

Phillip Jensen’s dual appointment as Dean and Director of Ministry Training and Development is seen as a major step in Sydney Diocese’s goal of seeing at least ten per cent of the population in Bible-based churches over ten years.

Media are permitted to film, photograph or record the service. Photos of Phillip Jensen are available on request.
