Global warming, toxic waste, whale hunting - Sydney Anglicans have strong opinions on all the top environmental topics, they just don’t know it yet, says the diocese’s Social Issues Executive.
The SIE has released a 24 page booklet titled Environment - A Christian Response, filled with down-to-earth, practical tips on how to tackle our world's pressing environmental issues.
“The booklet aims to help Christian people in their thinking about the environment,” says SIE chairman the Rev Dr Andrew Cameron.
"It summarises some environmental views; it outlines the overall biblical view; and offers some ways forward."
Dr Cameron, who lectures in ethics at Moore Theological College, says the pamphlet is an easy-to-digest approach to the issue rather than an in-depth overview of the science.
"There are many questions it doesn't solve, but it's a great start.'"
Meanwhile, the National Council of Churches (NCCA) has joined forces with the Australian Conservation Foundation to tackle what they label as "dangerous climate change'.
The NCCA brochure Changing Climate, Changing Creation is being distributed to churches across the country, with particular support from the Uniting Church and Catholic Earthcare.
"Care for the environment is a critical issue in our time," says the Rev John Henderson, General Secretary of the NCCA.
"While we don't understand everything, we do know that human activity is doing great, and maybe irreparable damage to our home," he says.
The Changing Climate, Changing Creation brochure encourages Australian Christians to find out more about reducing energy and water usage.
