Archbishop Peter Jensen’s weekly online series on The Essential Jesus (the gospel of Luke). In each study the Archbishop will lead us through the book we intend on giving away to as many people as possible.

STEP 1: READING

Read Luke chapter 24, verses 36-53.

STEP 2: REFLECTION
The disciples believed in life after death. For them Jesus was alive still in the sense that all people survived in an after world.  They probably believed that at the end of the age God would resurrect all people bodily. But a resurrection now confounded their expectations even though they had seen the mighty works of the Lord. They were inclined to think that he was a ghost. But the body was missing, and to show them that it was indeed their Lord, the conqueror of death, he ate and drank with them. It was what God had said would happen in scripture. From now on, there would be a gospel of forgiveness for the whole world, not just Israel. They are to be the eye-witnesses who vouch for it. They still do through Luke. Luke finishes as he began, in the temple with the praise of God.

STEP 3: DISCUSSION
1 Where is Jesus now? Does he remain man as well as God? Is he resurrected as man?
2 How important is the fact that this si the fulfilment scripture?
3 What is the gospel message to the nations?
