Indie punkers, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, came to mainstream attention with Show Your Bones (2006), which was nominated for a Grammy. Their latest album, It’s Blitz!, has been getting rave reviews, and has sold well in the US, the UK and Australia.
This album rebuilds the band’s punk guitar sound on top of some blistering dance beats. Add in keyboards and Karen O’s high octane vocals, and the result is a perfect alt-rock dance album.
There is plenty to hold your interest here. The band have complained in the past about whiny alt-rock, and they’ve set out to produce songs that are, first and foremost, entertaining and fun pieces of music. They absolutely succeed.
Don’t look for too much depth in the lyrics. As with most dance albums, the words are very much secondary - throw together some half-formed ideas and interesting phrases, add a heavy dose of repetition, and press blend. There are your lyrics.
But it doesn’t matter. This is not an album about ideas, it’s an album about rhythm and noise. In the song Heads will Roll, Karen O sings, over and over, “Dance til your dead”, and that’s about as deep as the message gets. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
