Australia's most popular women's sport is strengthening the ties that bind Anglican educators and their school communities.
The inaugural Sydney Anglican Schools Corporation Netball Gala day has drawn together eight school communities from across the state.
Hosted by Rouse Hill Anglican College, the event included teams from Arndell, Claremont, Loquat Valley, Richard Johnson, Shoalhaven, Thomas Hassall and Wollondilly.
Event co-ordinator Leighton Smith says it's hard to underestimate the interest netball generates.
An appearance by Australian and Sydney Swifts Player Megan Anderson attracted a mob of fans.
"Megan spent two hours signing autographs, featuring in photos with students and talking to the girls about netball," he says.
The winners of the five age divisions were spread evenly across the schools present (see fact box), with each victorious team awarded a perpetual shield by Rouse Hill Principal, Mr Peter Fowler.
Organisers say the gala day succeeded as a sporting event and as a means of building the community between schools and their families.
"It was a great day," says Mr Smith, "Thanks to the wonderful spirit of everyone involved including students, teachers, parents and helpers."
"I was very impressed with the success of the day and I think it's likely it will become an annual date on the Sydney Anglican Schools Corporation calendar."
