What are the two biggest days in a kid’s year? Their birthday and Christmas.
Why? They get presents and the family celebrates.
For months in advance they talk about what will happen, and how it will be celebrates, and what they’ll get.
Easter though largely flies under the radar. Sure - there are hot cross buns and an Easter egg, maybe a visit to the Show. But it’s not anticipated in the same kind of way.
What if we Christians were counter-cultural at this point and really celebrated Easter? What if we put more energy into it than Christmas? What if we had a great family celebration and gave out Easter presents!
I know some of you will just think “this is selling out to consumerism and the last thing kids need is more presents - the focus should be on Jesus not on getting stuff.”
But if you feel that strongly about consumerism then maybe Christmas and birthday should be off the table first?
If I had to choose one date that is the most important in the year to celebrate then Easter would win hands down.
The death and resurrection of Jesus brings in the new creation, gives us new life, and will be celebrated into eternity. Birthdays just mark laps around the sun. Christmas is great, but only as a prelude to Easter. So if Easter is the big deal, then lets make a big deal of it. Let the celebrations begin!
And if the K-Mart toy department suddenly is flooded by Christians wanting to celebrate Easter then don’t tell me news won’t get out.
So am I crazy or will you join me?
