Archbishop Peter Jensen has begun meeting small groups of rectors from across Sydney to discuss and plan for Connect 09.
The groups, of six or seven, stay at Bishopscourt for two days of prayer and planning.
The participants so far have come from regions stretching from Quakers Hill to Shellharbour.
The conference begins with an update from the Archbishop on the plans for Connect 09 across the Diocese, and then rectors discuss local ideas and planning.
There’s also a session with the Connect 09 team covering Diocese-wide plans including resources and media support.
One of the first participants, the Rev Ross Hathway, of Kellyville Anglican Church, says the theme resonates with people: “I think Connect is a great term and one that most people understand.”
He says the joint approach of Connect 09 is heartening. “One of my goals has always been to take a lot of the fear out of outreach, and part of that is going to be done by realising that people all over Sydney are having a go at this.”
The Rev Brian Heath from Frenchs Forest Anglican Church was encouraged by the interchange with his peers. “It’s been very stimulating to hear from other guys what can be done and what will be done.
“Bouncing ideas off one another has been tremendous, but it’s also great just to hear the fleshing out of Connect 09 beyond what we heard at Synod.”
The Archbishop plans to continue the mini-conferences throughout the year, and is personally inviting rectors to come.
“I’m working my way through our clergy lists, but if you wish to signal an immediate interest you can contact my office and we’ll see if we can fit you in.”
