A beachside Sydney parish is receiving an injection of new life that's one part Asian and one part academic.
The Asian Australian Bible Church (AABC), a congregation of Unichurch, will be incorporated into St Mark's, Malabar, forming a partnership between the two churches under the leadership of current AABC minister, the Rev Andrew Moore.
Mr Moore says he is excited by the new opportunities this merger offers.
"One of the plusses of joining St Mark's is we can learn from the wisdom and experience of the Christians at Malabar," he says.
The morning congregation at St Mark's which contains around 50 people, mostly seniors, will combine with a similar number of young workers and young families from the AABC morning service.
The church will also gain an evening congregation of university students and young workers including Malabar resident Yoke Lee, who started at AABC as a student and now works as a web developer.
"I'm excited about the merger. I've lived in Malabar for the last 20 years, so I'm part of that community," she says.
"I hope we will still work as a network church " as Asians are networking people " and as a community church."
The four and a half-year-old AABC began life as a ministry primarily to university students meeting in a lecture hall in the University of New South Wales.
The church has since grown to two congregations with members entering the workforce and having families.
"We looked to see if there was a local Anglican church we could team up with. We wanted a home base and we wanted to get out into the local community," Mr Moore says.
This move follows a precedent set in recent years by other St Matthias congregations: the Korean Bible Fellowship partnering with St Andrews, Strathfield; the Greek Bible Fellowship with St David's, Arncliffe; and the Inner West Bible Fellowship with St Matthew's, Ashbury.
Mr Moore will become Rector of St Mark's, taking over from Paul Cohen who left at the end of last year.
He will be joined by new Senior Assistant Minister, the Rev Gordon Boughton, who recently resigned as Rector of All Saints, Waitara, where he has been since 1989.
"He'll be a huge help for me as he's been a Rector for many years and I haven't run a parish before," Mr Moore says.
