A troupe of 30 orphans have delighted the ears of Sydney Anglicans and brought attention to the needs for the gospel in Uganda through a series of concerts in Australia this past fortnight.

The Watoto Children's Choir visited Sydney performing at Figtree Anglican Church and St Alban’s, Five Dock.

Figtree Anglican Church is partnering Watoto Child Care Ministries in Uganda.

The ministry seeks to provide spiritual, physical, educational and emotional care to the children of Uganda, 1.7 million of who are orphans as a result of civil war and the AIDS epidemic.

Figtree parishioner Vanessa Goodhew is calling for Sydney Anglicans to be part of a team of 30 people who will visit Uganda in April 2006 to assist with important building work.

"Figtree Anglican Church is coordinating the giving of funds to build a number of fully furnished houses valued at $17,000 each," she says.

Mrs Goodhew says her church first came into contact with the Watoto ministry after the choir performed at the opening of a new Figtree church building.

“We hosted a concert last year and different families from the church billeted some of the children,” she says.

“That was our first contact. They provided information about the project, and that got us rolling to organise the trip.”

Watoto Child Care Ministries is committed to raising the future generation of Ugandan leaders as men and women who testify to the glory of God.

Figtree Anglican Church is coordinating the giving of funds to build several fully furnished houses valued at $17,000 each and is sending a team to go and assist with this work in April 2006.

The opportunity exists for other interested people to join them for two weeks and participate in a life-changing experience as they help build a number of these houses.

“No experience is necessary,” says Mrs Goodhew. “Just a willing heart and willing hands.”

"We will work along side Ugandan builders for six days, visit Kampala Pentacostal church with its 12000 members on the Sunday, come back for three more days of building then have a have a three day safari."

"It will be a great opportunity to interact with local children and visit local villages and schools."

Watoto Child Care Ministries was started in 1992 by Canadian missionaries, Gary and Marilyn Skinner, to address the Ugandan orphan crisis.

The Watoto Building Team Project Information Night is on tonight at 8pm at The Hub, Figtree Anglican Church, Gibsons Road, Figtree.
