The Cronulla Sharks can rocket into second place on the National Rugby League ladder with a win over West Tigers at Campbelltown this evening.
Six Sharks first graders are praying - if not quite for that win - certainly that their perfomances "bring glory to God'.
Among them is winger David Simmons, who is also a youth group leader at St Luke's Anglican Church, Miranda.
"Six first graders meet before every game to pray for safety and that we play well," explains David. "We always finish by asking God to use our talents for his glory."
The prayer group was started by Sharks star forward and former International Jason Stevens.
The six players also meet each Wednesday for small group discipleship with Jason's brother and former Sharks player, Paul Stevens, who is now the Sharks' chaplain.
David Simmons says the support of his fellow Christians at the Sharks helps him be a good role model for the boys he leads at St Luke's youth group.
"The footy is a real blessing," he says. "The boys do find it easier to relate to me and listen to what I am saying."
"I really want to set a good example for them."
Asked if his footballer's lifestyle, high profile and media exposure makes that more difficult, David says, "The only real problem I've had is being caught by the boys swearing on TV out of frustration during a game."
David is engaged to be married to Samantha Garlato in September. The wedding is booked for the weekend after the Grand Final.
The way the Sharks are playing this year, David may well have organised his schedule a bit tight.
"We are set up for a good season," he admits, with a laugh. "We should certainly be in the finals."
