The first Argentine pope has been described as 'more than a mere churchman' as Anglicans assess the election of Francis I.

The first to speak out was the former Primate of the Southern Cone (South America) and bishop of Argentina, Greg Venables, who knows the new pope well and participated with him in lobbying government on social issues.

Bishop Venables describes the former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio as "much more of a Christian, Christ centered and Spirit filled, than a mere churchman. He believes the Bible as it is written."

The Cardinal and the bishop campaigned against same-sex marriage in Argentina.

"He is consistently humble and wise, outstandingly gifted yet a common man. He is no fool and speaks out very quietly yet clearly when necessary" said Venables, "I consider this to be an inspired appointment not because he is a close and personal friend but because of who he is In Christ. Pray for him."

Archbishop Jensen, in a statement just after the election, said "The papacy continues to have huge global significance in testing times for humanity.  We join those who pray that Pope Francis will use the office to further the gospel of Jesus Christ for the sake of all humanity.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said "We wish Pope Francis every blessing in the enormous responsibilities that he has assumed on behalf of Roman Catholics around the world."
