The Rev Fred Nile has been nominated as the Christian Democratic Party’s Senate candidate, representing New South Wales in the forthcoming Federal Election.
Mr Nile said he was ‘deeply moved’ by the unanimous nomination, and requested time to consult his wife, Elaine and his family and to consider the matter in prayer before accepting the invitation.
Mr Nile has been a State Member of the Legislative Council since 1981 and is the longest serving member currently in New South Wales Parliament.
Mr Nile hopes to have the support of the Christian Community and the ‘family-loving’ people in New South Wales to achieve enough votes to be elected to the senate. “I will represent families and the institution of marriage,” Mr Nile told Southern Cross. “The federal senate has become the new battlefield for social issues. The Green party have moved a bill in federal parliament to legalise same-sex marriages. I believe you need a vocal spokesperson in the Senate to make sure these types of bills won’t get passed.”
“If I could encourage the people of New South Wales to Vote 1 for Fred Nile it will be like a referendum on marriage,” Mr Nile said. “If we could get half a million or a million votes, that would send a strong message to the political parties of Australia to support the institution of marriage.”
