The discovery this month of six decomposed bodies of elderly people who have died in their homes highlights more than ever the need for increased community care services, says Sydney Anglican’s top community carer.

For Wendy Morris, Anglicare’s Manager of Community Aged Care and a member of Christ Church St Ives, this crisis in aged care indicates the extent of social isolation that some of our frail aged and elderly experience in our fallen world which cries out for Christ-centred solution.

In response, Anglicare recently commenced a new initiative to provide social support for elderly people living alone.

The programs look to recruit and train volunteers to visit people at their homes in Sutherland and Wollongong for a cup of tea, a simple chat and Christian fellowship to those who may want it.

But Wendy Morris is also encouraging Sydney Anglicans to look after their community, through simple acts of kindness.

"Whilst it is important for organisations like Anglicare to provide needed services, I think we as Christians also have the individual responsibility to care for our neighbours as Christ commands us."

"Even though loneliness from social isolation can be an issue, linking people to their community is not as difficult as we may think. Surprisingly it's the little things which provide that link," says Wendy.

"A lot of our elderly are quite capable, independent and want to maintain that lifestyle. Sometimes all that's required is a friendly smile or a chat over a cup of tea."

Researchers estimate more than half a million frail and elderly Australians will be living alone without the care of family or friends within the next 30 years.

With only 5 per cent of Australians over 65 living permanently in residential aged care, the overwhelming majority of older people are already living in households in the community.

Since 1997 Anglicare has offered social activities and services for the frail aged and elderly though its six day centres. For the socially isolated but independent, these centres give them something to look forward to and provide an opportunity for people to socialise in a safe environment.
