The parish of Wilberforce is commemorating the abolition of slavery by William Wilberforce 200 years ago.

St John's, Wilberforce honourary assistant minister, the Rev Sarah Plummer is encouraging members of the Wilberforce community to remember the man their town is named after, reflect on his impact on the abolition of slavery and respond to issues of modern-day slavery at celebrations to be held this Sunday.

"We are seeking to have this as a whole community event and ask that everyone come to this day," Mrs Plummer says.

"We are focusing on the local school, pre-school, day care, the local churches, the local businesses and friends and relatives past and present from Wilberforce."

Mrs Plummer is hoping to screen the Australian premiere of the film Amazing Grace which recounts William Wilberforce's efforts to abolish slavery in the British Empire.

She also wants to draw attention to the slavery in the world today.

"Sudanese Africans from Merrylands Anglican Church will share their stories as victims of modern-day slavery, as will a woman who was freed from her chains through Rahab Ministries, which seeks to put an end to the trafficking of women and children," Mrs Plummer says.

Mrs Plummer says the anniversary of Wilberforce's achievement is particularly significant to the church.

"This was a great man who put his faith into action. He used his profession to heighten the moral behaviour of society at the time. What a great role model for politicians today," she says.

"Wilberforce impacted the whole of British Society. He challenged their views on slavery, on greed and consumerism, on equality and he spoke God's word into the parliament."

The day celebrations begin on Sunday March 25 at 8am with the Bishop of Western Sydney, Ivan Lee speaking on William Wilberforce, his message and achievements at a church service at St John's, Wilberforce.

The day will conclude at 3pm with World Vision Australia CEO Tim Costello talking about how Christians can respond to slavery today.

Organisations such CMS, Bible Society, Micah Challenge, Amazing Change Campaign and the RSPCA will also be on-site to raise awareness about other causes.
