New Archdeacon for Anglican Church’s South Sydney region to be commissioned

The Rev Deryck Howell will be commissioned as the new Archdeacon of the Anglican Church’s South Sydney region, in a service at St Andrew’s Cathedral this Sunday night, May 11.

Dean Phillip Jensen will be the preacher at the service, which starts at 6.30pm at the Cathedral, located on George St, right next to Town Hall train station.

The service will be led by Robert Forsyth, Bishop of the South Sydney region, and Archbishop Peter Jensen will officially commission Mr Howell for his new role.

“Deryck is someone whom I have come to know and respect for his gentle wisdom and ability in working with people of all different kinds,” Bishop Forsyth said. “I am convinced that he will be able to relate warmly and well to the diverse range of parishes and traditions that are a mark of our region.”

Since 1982 Mr Howell served as assistant minister at St Matthias’, Centennial Park, where he worked alongside Dean Phillip Jensen. Prior to this, he served curacies at St John’s, Parramatta and St Matthew’s, Manly, before being appointed Curate in Charge and then rector of St Aidan’s,
Hurstville Grove.

Mr Howell has been a member of the South Sydney Regional Council since its inception in 1996, a position which he says has given him an insight into the functioning of the South Sydney region and the whole Diocese. “I have really enjoyed getting to know the wider region through the work of the Council,” he said.

Mr Howell said he sees the role of Archdeacon as ‘an opportunity to serve the churches in the area alongside Robert Forsyth’.

As a child Mr Howell attended St Barnabas’, East Roseville. He worked in the Commonwealth Bank for four years before attending Moore Theological College and entering full-time Christian ministry. He is married to Glenda and they have five adult children and eight grandchildren.
