Australia's oldest Cathedral, St Andrew’s in Sydney, will host celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II at the start of June.

The Queen visited the Cathedral in 1954 on her first tour of Australia, and has visited several times since, the last for the Commonwealth of Nations Service in 2006.

The Diamond Jubilee service will be held at 10:30 am on Sunday, June 3rd in the presence of dignitaries including the Premier, Barry O'Farrell, the British Consul General, Richard Morris, Federal Opposition leader Tony Abbott and other dignitaries.

The Dean of Sydney,Phillip Jensen, will preach at the service.

"Whatever your view of Republicanism or Monarchy, at the moment Elizabeth the second is the constitutional monarch and all agree that as a person our present Queen has served with diligence and dignity" Dean Jensen says. "She is loved across the British Commonwealth of Nations and in the Commonwealth of Australia in particular. It's right that we as a nation who enjoy such political stability and justice that has flown from our British heritage, should thank God for answering our prayers to "lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way."

The Dean said "It is a particular joy to be able to thank God for a Monarch who, last Christmas in her message said 'God sent into the world a unique person - neither a philosopher nor a general, important though they are, but a Saviour, with the power to forgive. Forgiveness lies at the heart of the Christian faith. It can heal broken families, it can restore friendships and it can reconcile divided communities. It is in forgiveness that we feel the power of God's love'."

For the Diamond Jubilee service the Cathedral choir and Cathedral brass will lead the music.
