A well-known Australian Anglican illustrator is training aspiring artists to use their gifts to share the gospel.
Anglicare ESL has enlisted illustrator Christina Booth to run a free Christian illustrators’ workshop free of charge on December 1.
The aim of the workshop is to provide Anglicare with copyright-free illustrations that will be used in ESL teaching materials.
Diocesan ESL Adviser Cathryn Thew leads a team of ESL teachers throughout the Diocese who prepare ESL material for use as an outreach in more than 60 churches across Sydney.
"We put Christian-based lessons together but financially we work on the smell of an oily rag," she says.
"To make lessons attractive we need pictures but we have run into a big problem with copyright issues. We need more copyright-free material."
While the workshop will cost nothing to attend, a form of "payment' from the attendees is that the illustrations they produce at the workshop will be available for Anglicare to use free of charge.
The workshop will also give Christina, a recognised and accomplished illustrator, the opportunity to share her talents and experience with other Christians interested in professional illustrating.
"This year I have had five books released which I illustrated. My own picture book, as both author and illustrator, Purinina, A Devil’s Tale, was released in April," she says.
At the day-long workshop Christina hopes to give aspiring Christian illustrators some useful and practical tips such as information about intellectual property and copyright issues and options for earning money as an illustrator.
Christina says she is pleased to use her abilities to assist Anglicare in this unique way.
"Anglicare contribute a lot to the community and I believe in the Christian community assisting and supporting each other so that we can mutually work together to assist others, spread the gospel and bring God glory," she says.
The St Aidan's, East Launceston member feels that through illustrating, God has put her in a place where she can influence many other people, particularly children.
"I do a lot of public speaking and presentations, so how I conduct myself as a person hopefully reflects my faith. In using my gifts I am trying hard to keep the glory on God rather than myself."
