The Ignite ‘07 DVD has been released on the back of the highly successful festival. The DVD is packed with interesting and thought-provoking short films concerning the themes of Wisdom, Humility, Grace, Sacrifice, Miracles, Justice and Unity.
Many of the films would be useful tools to accompany any sermon and this DVD collection includes several standouts.
The Convenient Truth based on John 8:12, shows a company's idea of how to show the "light' to the world. In this film, the light manifests itself as a lightbulb. While the producers can see that the light bulb is on, journalists at the press conference they hold cannot see what all the fuss is about. Others who try and use the light comment on how they have put it all together properly but it still does not light up.
The anaglogy used here is clever " only some can see the light, and just putting it together right " i.e. doing religion "right', does not guarantee that you will see the light. It is only with God's grace and the help of the Holy Spirit that you can see it.
Of Heart and Mind, based on Psalm 18:28, is a powerful film that almost perfectly illustrates the concept of sacrifice. It shows how people will sacrifice much for the sake of love, drawing a parallel between the film's protagonists and Jesus and humanity.
It is the strange concept behind the film Herb and Patch that makes watching it so compelling. The strong biblical messages make it all the more powerful and relevant. Based on James 1:17, the film is a conversation between two garden gnomes, who are discussing their relative positions in the garden. One is satisfied, knowing that he could be much worse off, and the other is sorely lacking in humility and believes that he should be in a much nicer place in the garden. The metaphor here of Christians as the garden gnomes and God as the gardener is effective and interesting.
A Great Light won the Golden Sparky at this year's awards night. It is not just for this reason that it is a useful tool for churches. It is because of the strong message and interesting concept contained within the film. This film brilliantly captures the desire to evangelise when you yourself have heard the message of God's love and accepted God.
Several of the films showcased on the DVD, while not suitable for use with a sermon, would be highly effective for use in a youth setting. Sauls Conversion " Lego Edition is one such film.
The film details the story of Saul's conversion in a way that will engage and entertain younger viewers. The jokes and music also are aimed at this age group. Watching this film would allow younger viewers to perhaps discuss the story of Saul's conversion with non-Christian friends, opening up the way for further discussion on Christianity.
All up, Ignite ‘07 is an essential resource for any Christian's DVD library.
