The leader of Australia’s largest Anglican Diocese, Dr Peter Jensen, says the celebration of Easter is the historical reminder of the execution but also the resurrection of Jesus.
Christians around the world celebrate Easter this weekend and in Sydney, church services will take place today for Good Friday and again on Sunday when the service especially celebrates the resurrection.
In delivering this year’s Easter Message, the Archbishop of Sydney says humans don’t know what death is like because no-one has ever returned.
But, he said, “There is a man who has been there and come back and told us what to expect. That man is Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world.”
Dr Jensen says Christians love Easter because “it is the historical reminder that although Jesus was executed by being crucified and was truly dead, three days later he broke out of his tomb and showed that death is not the last word in life”.
The Archbishop says that historical fact changes everything.
“Instead of living in fear and anxiety” he said, “It’s as though God has turned the light on and dispelled our fear.”
“Jesus dies so that we could be forgiven and he lives to give us life beyond the grave. Now that’s a great fact!” the Archbishop said.
