Budding young writers are being exposed to the gospel through an effort by Anglican Youthworks to meet the educational needs of Sydney schools.

Forty students from St George Christian School, The Illawarra Grammar School and Arden Anglican School went to Port Hacking recently to undertake the first Writers in Residence camp, part of a new breed of specialised school camping programs run by Youthworks.

During the week-long camp they heard talks from guest writers and gospel talks from youth workers.

"These programs have been designed to meet the specific educational needs of the schools we work in partnership with," says coordinator Jenn Phillips.

"The aim for this program was to target students with a flair for the written word, encouraging and nurturing them in their pursuits in a Christian environment where they would also be exposed to Bible teaching and gospel challenges."

The students enjoyed a day trip to Hazelhurst Art Gallery at Gymea and a sunrise boat trip down the Port Hacking River.

They were also presented with a published portfolio of work which was developed during the course of camp.

"Ultimately, what we hope will last beyond their memories of camp will be their knowledge of God's love shown through Jesus," Ms Phillips says.
