Anglican Media Sydney's The Christ Files documentary has won this year's $10,000 Pilgrim Media Prize for excellence in Christian communication.
The award, presented by the founder of Pilgrim, Mr Graham Wade, and former General Manager, Mr Tim Matthews, is part of the ongoing legacy of Pilgrim International, following 50 years of creative media production around the world.
Allan Dowthwaite, CEO of Anglican Media and director of The Christ Files, received the award at the Christian Management Association conference dinner held this week in Sydney.
"I was blown away when I was told we had won this award," Mr Dowthwaite said. "It was totally unexpected, and a real honour. Everyone involved in this project gave it their all, and it’s very encouraging to have that effort acknowledged in this way - especially by our peers in the media."
Presented by well-known historian and author Dr John Dickson, The Christ Files assesses the historical evidence for Jesus, answering some of the most controversial religious debates of our time such as "Was Jesus married to Mary Magdalene?'.
It was watched by over 300,000 Australians when it was broadcast by the Seven Network earlier this year, and sales of the DVD have recently passed the 8,000 mark, making it Anglican Media’s highest selling product ever.
This success has prompted discussion about producing a follow-up program.
"The Christ Files answers the "how do we know what we know about Jesus?' question," said Mr Dowthwaite. "The obvious question then is ‘well, what do we know?’. We’re currently talking with John about producing a program that will focus more closely on the details of Jesus' life and ministry.”
Negotiations are also underway that could see The Christ Files broadcast in Europe and the Middle East later this year.
