As part of Connect 09 strategy, Winmalee’s senior assistant minister, the Rev Rob Powell and his family have already seen a child from their street come to church after praying for their neighbours over dinner.

The child, at primary school, had only been to church once before, according to Mr Powell.

He says his family invited the year one student, along with their other neighbours to a special Egyptian service at Winmalee Anglican Church.

Each person in his seven-strong family says grace one day each week, including prayers for their lost friends.

Mr Powell says they have had increased contact with a number of their neighbours as a result.

The Powells also included prayers for a household whose owners they had never seen before.

Two weeks after they prayed for one household unknown to them, Mr Powell's wife Kathy met them walking in the street.

Mr Powell is urging his congregation to pray for their streets for two reasons.

"One so that they'd eventually hear the gospel from somebody" we're concerned about their salvation " but we're also praying for their general wellbeing," he said.

He says a number of his congregation members have started listing names and house numbers, and have been praying for their surrounding homes.

Tens of thousands receive prayer cards

In the lead-up to the first Connect09 prayer day last Sunday, 70 thousand prayer cards have been distributed across the Sydney Anglican Diocese.

The cards were originally designed and circulated by Anglican Media as an insert in the Southern Cross

However some churches have phoned and requested the Connect09 office send more cards.

The prayer cards are designed to be a reminder to Sydney Anglicans that outreach is God's work.

Connect09 Executive Director Andrew Nixon says the demand for the cards shows the willingness of people to pray for their neighbours.

"" [I]t shows that people are taking seriously the Archbishop’s call to prayer for our entire community," Mr Nixon said.

The Connect09 website also has a prayer section where weekly prayer points are posted and a different part of the diocese is highlighted each week.

Churches around the Diocese will be invited to join together in prayer for the campaign again for another Connect09 Prayer Day, planned for Sunday, November 2.
