Amazing Space! Amazing Grace! St Andrew’s Cathedral photography exhibition

The Interpretation Space at St Andrew’s Cathedral will open on Thursday 11 April 2002 at 6pm with an exhibition of black and white photographs of the amazing Australian artisans at work on the restoration of the Cathedral.

Donald McDonald AO, Chairman of the ABC will open the exhibition and The Rt Rev Robert Forsyth, Bishop of South Sydney will dedicate the Interpretation Space. The inaugural exhibition is of detailed images, by photographer Christopher Shain, of the master craftsmen in their own environment working on different aspects of the Cathedral’s restoration. It includes an explanation of their reasons for choosing their career and their involvement with the cathedral project.

Development of an Interpretation Space was a key component of the restoration program for St Andrew’s Cathedral. The Space now provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the Cathedral’s history and its life in the city, and a way of gaining a deeper insight into the Cathedral community: the staff, the volunteers and the congregation.

Architect, Paul Davies says: “Historic artefacts such as the memorial plaques which, over time, had found a place around the Cathedral, have now been gathered together in the Interpretation Space as a way of introducing visitors to some of the unique aspects of the Cathedral.”

“Significant objects, such as the magnificent model of the Cathedral, made in 1848 to the plans by architect Edmund Blacket, are also on permanent display,” he said.

A program of temporary exhibitions highlighting different aspects of the Cathedral building and its activities begins with this exhibition. Future exhibitions will continue to provide a dynamic complement to the daily program of church services, musical events and special occasions.

The occasion will also mark the final evensong at 5.30pm by the St Andrew’s Cathedral School Touring Choir which will leave on 13 April for a tour of the UK, including singing at the unveiling of the Centenary of Federation Window in St George’s Chapel, Windsor; the Anzac Day Service at Westminster Abbey on 25 April; and the Queen’s Jubilee Service at St George’s Chapel, Windsor.

The Acting Dean, The Most Rev Harry Goodhew AO, said, “This is the beginning of a creative opportunity for the Cathedral to reach out not only to overseas visitors but to people from our own city. They will be able to come in and draw aside from their busyness and reflect on the amazing grace of God who loves us and gave his son for us.”
