Anglican Church to debate radical plan to start thousands of new churches across Sydney
The Anglican Church in Sydney is set to debate a radical plan to launch thousands of new congregations across Sydney in under 10 years.
The Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, which begins next Monday, October 14 will discuss the detailed strategies needed to implement Archbishop Peter Jensen’s goal of seeing 10 per cent of Sydney’s population in ‘Bible-believing churches’ in 10 years.
The Synod will be held in the Wesley Centre, 220 Pitt Street, Sydney on October 14, 15, 16, 21 and 22.
Archbishop Peter Jensen will set out the rationale behind this comprehensive strategy in his Presidential Address, which opens the Synod at 2.30pm on Monday, October 14.
“We know the misery of unbelief: misery now, and misery in eternity to come,” Archbishop Jensen said. “Then, will you give up your small ambitions, and in whatever way, with whatever gifts you have, join in the great task of persuading others to be reconciled to God?”
Sydney Diocese has net assets of $500 million, not including parish land and buildings. This Synod represents the first time the Anglican Church in Sydney has made a concerted effort to use its financial resources to grow church membership. Termed ‘strategy-driven spending’, this issue will be the focus of debate on Tuesday, October 15.
Other issues on the agenda include:
- the war on Iraq;
- embryonic stem-cell legislation;
- mandatory detentions for asylum seekers; and
- recruiting Christians to work in Anglican schools.
These issues are raised as private members motions that will be debated from 3.15pm to 4pm on Wednesday, October 16, Monday, October 21 and Tuesday, October 22.
