Consecration of Bishop of Wollongong
in St Andrew's Anglican Cathedral tonight
Archbishop Peter Jensen, Archbishop of Sydney will consecrate the Rev Alan Stewart as Bishop of Wollongong in the Diocese of Sydney at 7.30pm tonight. The service will be held in St Andrew's Anglican Cathedral, George Street, Sydney.
Alan Stewart was ordained deacon and then priest by the Archbishop of Sydney in 1989. After working in the parishes of Tregear and Centennial Park, as a specialist in youth ministry he was appointed CEO of Anglican Youthworks in the Diocese of Sydney from 2002.
The presenting bishops at the consecration service will be the Rt Rev Glenn Davies, Bishop of North Sydney, and the Rt Rev Reg Piper, formerly Bishop of Wollongong. Archbishop Jensen will be joined in the service by Dr Phillip Aspinall, Archbishop of Brisbane and Primate, and bishops from the Diocese of Sydney, the Province of New South Wales and from other parts of Australia.
The Rev Matthew Pickering, Chaplain at Shore School, will be the special preacher at this consecration service.
A Wollongong regional welcome service for their new bishop will be held on Saturday 31st March at 11.30am in the auditorium at the Illawarra School (TIGS). The Wollongong region covers Anglican parishes from the Sutherland Shire, the Illawarra and South Coast to Ulladulla, and Southern Highlands and Camden areas.
Prior to the Welcome service a special media conference will be held at 10.30am in the Recital Room at TIGS, to enable Archbishop Jensen to introduce Bishop Stewart to local media.
